I'm sure as nursing students, we are beginning to realize how stressful we can be during the semester. And as first semester students, none the less, we are even more stressed because we are figuring out everything that needs to be done for the first time. With all the stress that is accumulating throughout the semester it is important to realize, take a break, take a breather. Stressing yourself out more isn't going to help you in anyway, you'll just be freaking yourself out more and that is no good.
Yes, as nursing students we should be studying vigorously for the next exam, quiz, or whatever it may be, but it is important to give yourself a break once in a while. It is one thing that my friends and I have noticed...we keep each other sane! You shouldn't be locked away in the library or in your room all the time because you will go insane from stress.

Throughout the week when you're with your study group, or close friends, take some time to relax, do something fun and enjoyable to get your minds off of school for just a few hours. Here are a few things that me and my friends do to destress while trying to survive nursing school:
1. Talk to someone in the upper semesters. Connections can be key to relieving all the stress. Students in the upper semesters tell you their secrets to surviving each semester, after all they went through the exact same things you're going through right now. I'm constantly talking to my best friend whose almost done with nursing school to teach me his ways of surviving each semester and helps me with information I don't know. The one thing he keeps reiterating is finding time to do something you enjoy to keep your mind off of school. Relax, it's not the end of the world to take a break from school from time to time.
2. Before a study session, we grab lunch or food and spend that time either talking or watching a movie while eating. Doing so helps keep your mind off of school work for just an hour, and sometimes that hour is all you need.
3. Go see a movie! New movie just released and you've been dying to watch it, it's a two hour movie. I'm sure you can spend 2 hours not worrying about school work, after all you have a date with your favorite celebrity right?
4. Foodie adventures! I'm usually to food fanatic in my group, but as soon as my nursing friends started hanging out with me...well ever so slowly I've been turning them into a food fanatic as well. Shhhhh my bad guys!

Do something you are passionate about, or something that makes you enjoy the things in life, something that can bring a smile to your face for a few hours or days and then jump right back into the nursing world! Life as a nursing student isn't easy, but with your friends they can make it just a little bit more bearable. As my friend Ashley would say to us, "(You're) The ones who help keep me sane even through the stress & panic attacks of nursing school"
